If Aristotle Were Mayor: The New Soul of Governance
Based on the Ideas of Tom Morris from If Aristotle Ran General Motors
Leaders and managers in both business and government, in recent years, have come to understand that improved quality and efficiency are only part of the quest for excellence. The great untapped reservoir of improvement resides within the people who serve and their relationships with one another and their constituents.
In his ground-breaking book, If Aristotle Ran General Motors, contemporary philosopher Tom Morris points out the importance of focusing on the spirit of the people who do the work in any organization. It's the people involved in any enterprise who are the ultimate source and foundation for any form of lasting success. Dr. Morris digs into the insights of the greatest philosophers who have ever analyzed human nature, and lays out four foundations for building up the spirit and excellence of any collaborative enterprise--Truth, Beauty, Goodness, and Unity.
This program offered under the auspices of the Morris Institute for Human Values applies Tom Morris' ideas to the task of improving community collaborative relations between local government, community organizations, businesses and citizens.
This presentation examines some of the greatest, most practical wisdom we have for improving processes in all matters of local governance and community building. The Four Foundations of Human Excellence--Truth, Beauty, Goodness and Unity--provide us a wealth of direction for fulfilling Aristotle's claim that a city is "a partnership for living well." From this presentation will come new inspiration and direction for achieving excellence in local government.
